Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work

Assessment DescriptionInstructors observed students in three activities: whole class warm-ups and theater games, small group work, and performance in front of an audience. This observation and scoring took place twice over the course of the semester.

Each student was ranked on a 3-point scale in each activity.

1 = student was unable to participate appropriately in the activity

2 = student participated with assistance

3 = student participated independently

Data Summary• Overall, in whole class activities, 36 out of 98 students (37%) changed their scores, with an average change of 0.81.

• In group work, 26 of 98 (27%) students changed their scores, with an average change of 0.88.

• In performance, 30 of 80 (38%) students changed their scores, with an average change of .73.

Results varied from section to section, allowing us to compare conditions that led to improved scores.
Analysis SummaryWe saw positive changes when:

Attendance was consistent

Students had a lot of practice with particular movement, skill, scene, or character

Students were comfortable and engaged with the instructor, the theme, or the class method

Students had repeated the class

Students developed confidence

We saw no change or negative change when:

Attendance was inconsistent

Students were adjusting to loss of long time instructor

Students has less time to prepare for final performance

Agency staff and volunteers were occasionally disruptive and not providing appropriate supports.
Next Steps PlannedEstablish the final goal earlier in the semester

Set class ground rules earlier in the semester

Students rehearse on their own without assistance from other staff and volunteers

Students try modeling for other students

More communication with the staff (especially attendants and volunteers), about their roles and their abilities to step back from the students. Communicate expectations to support staff on how best to support students in class.
