Data SummaryThough we have many different assignments throughout the year that address the course objectives, we chose one basic art skill, the use of color, to assess for this year. The instructors used different methods of assessing partly due to the different populations in the classes and partly due to personal style.



In Ms. Goodman's classes, students worked on using a complexity of color in their self portraits: 70% were able to use a complexity of color, 30% needed more improvement.



In Ms. Brown's class there were 3 assessment assignments:

1.collages of warm or cool colors. 82% of students met the criteria, 18% made beautiful collages but mixed warm and cool colors.

2, collages of warm colors on a cool background, or the reverse, cool colors on warm, 89% of students met the criteria, 11% mixed the colors.

3. watercolor paintings-- cool colors for the water and warm colors for the sunset. 45% were able to meet the criteria, 55% did beautiful paintings but did not use the colors as specified.



In the students' satisfaction survey, 83% of students reported they were satisfied with the methods and techniques they are learning which enable them to express themselves artistically. 13% did not respond (many can't respond verbally).



Because many students are non-verbal, instructors decided to also use the percentage of completed projects as a measure of student satisfaction. 88% of students completed the projects they started. The other 12% started these assessment assignments, but either did not return to finish or turned their attention to something else.
Analysis Summary71 % of students met the criteria for the assessed basic skill, use of color.This seemed to be a reasonably successful outcome which may indicate most students understand some basic concepts of color.



In Ms. Goodman's classes students spent many weeks on their self portraits and were observed showing improvement mixing colors and using a complexity of color with increased direction and practice.



In Ms. Brown's classes, the results of assessments 1 and 2 may indicate students better understood the concept and/ or directions by the 2nd assessment (or were more willing to comply). The third assessment possibly showed that students had difficulty using watercolor, were unable to transfer their understanding of warm and cool colors to a different medium, or they wanted to do follow their own inner direction.



88% project completion rate seems very positive. Students are satisfied with what they are creating or they would stop doing the projects.
Next Steps PlannedWe will continue to assess one basic skill which will allow us to continue developing our evaluation techniques and our skills working as a group rather than as individual instructors.

Beginning Fall 2013 we will assess "line qualities" in drawings, paintings, and collage.

We will develop a new set of questions for the student satisfaction survey.
