GRPH 36 - Intermediate Graphic Design - Stage 5 - Deanna Alcorn

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
  • Student self-assessments (such as reflective journals and surveys)
  • Student satisfaction surveys
  • Capstone projects or final summative assignments
Assessment DescriptionAssessments are based on the Logo and Poster from the final class project, which built upon the first two projects in the SLO areas. Each step of the design process was evaluated for accurate completion, proficiency and demonstrated progress. Grading rubrics, analysis and direct observation were used in the assessment process. Additionally, an exit survey allowed students to evaluate their own skills.
Learning Outcomes1. Develop proficiency in producing thumbnails, roughs and comps.

2. Employ problem identification and ideation strategies, research and information gathering; and iterative design development ideas.

Data SummaryUsing the final class grades as a measure, there is a high level of competency in both SLO areas: the average score for the combined SLOs was 95%, and 19 out of 20 students received an A or B grade. For the first SLO, 95% of students scored 86% or higher. For the second SLO, 100% of students measured 80% or higher.

It’s evident from the exit survey that students now have a strong grasp on and appreciation for design process, research and analysis. In their self-evaluations, over 50% of students indicated that they feel more competent in the areas of research, defining the problem and strategizing about solutions via the design brief, sketching concepts and evaluating ideas. Over 40% feel more competent in the areas of ideation strategies (working solo and in groups), gathering information about the audience, iterating on sketches, creating roughs and comps and iterating on their designs. (Note that those students who did not choose the above topics on the survey may already feel competent in those areas, or they may not yet feel competent.)
