Data Summary#1) 19/25 (76%) of students earned 70 or more/100 points (a grade of C or higher) on exam questions related to this objective. This indicates that a majority of students in the class were successful in mastering this learning outcome.

#2) 17/25 students (68%) of students registered for the class earned 70 or more/100 points (a grade of C or higher) on the topic essay assignment. This indicates that a majority of the students in the class were successful in mastering this learning outcome.
Analysis Summary#1) 19/25 (76%) of students registered for the class earned 70 or more/100 points (a grade of C or higher) on exam questions which required students to describe and explain structural changes in family form over historical periods in the modern era. This indicates that a majority of students in the class were successful in mastering this learning outcome.

#2) 17/25 students (68%) of students registered for the class earned 70 or more/100 points (a grade of C or higher) on the topic essay assignment. This

assignment required students to first write an inventory of what percentage of a total of 6 household tasks were completed by members of a shared household. The second step involved non-participant observation (field work) of actual task completion in the sample chosen; the final step required students to interpret and evaluate their observations in the form of a written 3 page essay. This percentage indicates that a majority of students in the class were successful in mastering this learning outcome.

One area of concern, however, is that several students who did not earn a grade of C or higher earned scores considerably less than 70/100 points with

approximately half of this group earning less than 65% of the points (D or lower work) and showing in their essays an inadequate grasp of the subject matter and concepts assigned. Even though regular written work was required in this class prior to the essay assignment in question, an effort should be made to reevaluate whether these previous writing assignments are preparing students for the essay assignment and/or appropriately indicating to the instructor how well students are understanding the course.
Next Steps PlannedIncorporate student self evaluations with respect to preparedness as well as progress being made toward assignment completion at regular intervals. Research web based tutorial videos specific to field observation and developing field notes.

Tentative Future Plans

TermFall 2013
Activities
  • Assessment (measurement) of outcomes
  • Analysis and discussion of assessment data and next steps
More DetailsAssessment will be made based on progress using question sets from 2 exams and 2 discussion forums over course of semester. Mastery will be measured using 70% passing given questions; progress will be measured by comparing average score for each question set over course of semester. Comparison of completion rate and score averages with previous semester data (Spring 2013) to assess improvement. Discussion of findings with department members inclusive of recommendations/feedback for instructional modifications as needed.
