ECON 3 - Microeconomics - Stage 5 - Douglas Orr

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Pre & post surveys or tests
Assessment DescriptionStudents were asked a series of questions on a pretest early in the semester and then asked the same questions at the end of the semester. All instructors used identical questions on both tests.
Learning OutcomesD. Define demand, supply, equilibrium price, and perfectly competitive markets, and analyze how changes in non-price factors affect market equilibrium; and identify the ways in which markets and the U.S. economy may diverge from the characteristics of a purely competitive model.

F. Define price elasticity of demand and supply; identify the five types of elasticity; calculate the elasticity coefficient from two points on a demand or supply curve; and explain the determinants of price elasticity.

Data SummaryFor SLO D: on the pretest 48 percent of the students answered the question correctly and on the post-test, 75 percent answered it correctly. For SLO F, on the pretest, 24 percent of the students answered the question correctly, and on the post-test, 77 percent answered it correctly.
Analysis SummaryWe found the level of improvement in both SLO areas during the semester to be encouraging. SLO F in particular addresses a mathematically complex issue, which is probably the most difficult concept in Econ 3. A 77 achievement rate is well above our target rate of 70 percent. Moreover, at the end of Fall 2013, we discussed the techniques used by the most successful instructors and other instructors attempted to use these techniques with generally positive outcomes.
