PE 29 - Firefighting and Public Safety Conditioning - Stage 5 - Sean Laughlin

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
  • Student self-assessments (such as reflective journals and surveys)
  • Student satisfaction surveys

Criteria: overall exit score of 90% or better.

Means: Students will be tested on the rules, safety guidelines utilized in the Physical Education course.

Criteria: 85% of students must score 90% or better.

Means: Students will summarize through written testing their knowledge of physical fitness preparation for firefighting and public safety sectors.

Criteria: 85% of students must score 80% or better.

Means: Students will demonstrate and display competency in physical fitness tests related to firefighting and public safety.

Criteria: 85% of students must score 80% or better in acceptable ranges.

Analysis SummaryTwo areas of negative student response was to Q2- …”clear safety instructions” this will be addressed in classes moving forward with a segment prior to each evolution addressing specific safety concerns. The second was Q4- “…transfer to a four-year university” where it was revealed anecdotally and voluntarily that several students had already achieved a four-year degree and their participation in class is mandated as a pre-requisite for the CCSF Fire Academy.

Moving forward, this SLO evaluation will be evaluated by an written examination at the end of the semester which will add validity to cumulative rules and safety guidelines throughout all class sessions.

This remains a valid assessment and will remain as such with the addition of the outcomes from the previous SLO on this report. Lectures will be restructured to gain enhance student cognitive experience / retention.

This will continue to represent a BASELINE assessment of students with varying physical fitness backgrounds.

This will continue to represent a MID-TERM assessment of students with varying physical fitness backgrounds

This class, as structured is meant to achieve gains in physical fitness related to Firefighting and Public Safety Conditioning as a 3-day / week class. As this class was only taught on 2-days (via 33705 001 and 34556 501 scheduling) more student accountability was given. Future classes will adhere to the 3-day / week scheduling where directed / supervised activities will take place.

Additional Highlights

We have completed our second full SLO cycle, and have closed the loop for the second semester in a row. We will continue to assess all of our courses offered and close the loop after each semester. This entire process has not only brought our department closer but has given us some great concrete data that we are using to improve our courses and teaching methodologies. The process is working for our department!

The implementation of Google forms for exit survey data collection –and soon to be implemented this Spring 2014 – skills assessment data collection is and will continue to be a tremendous tool for us. Not only does it make collection easy but also allows a clean and seamless transfer to Excel to run pivot table tabulations to allow for a clean collection, tabulation and presentation of data not only to be publicly posted but most importantly to be utilized by our instructors for stage 5 course loop closure. Best of all, it is free!
