BTEC 25 - Analytical PCR Techniques - Stage 5 - Ying-Tsu Loh

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
  • Student self-assessments (such as reflective journals and surveys)
  • Pre & post surveys or tests
  • Capstone projects or final summative assignments
Assessment DescriptionA "Design of Experiment" was used as a final project for the course. This project allowed the students to look up information using bioinformatics and make informed decisions on genes to examine using rt-qpcr.

Changes

DetailsThis class also saw a large increase in class size. I had to change the way the class was taught - having groups even in the simpler experiments. This, I felt, decreased learning and increased frustration amongst the students.

Additional Highlights

Some testaments to the improvement of the course using "design an experiment":

"Challenging class but learned a lot and was great. Should be more than a one unit course."

"Combination of PCR and qPCR is very powerful. Learning more than just techniques, also learning bioinformatics. Can't wait to run PCR in industry."

"Preparing the Lab reports was a lot of work but it really helped us to fully understand the concepts and the learning objectives of each experiment and it even makes the students to learn more things beyond what is given during class discussions."
