Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
  • Pre & post surveys or tests
Assessment DescriptionStudents were evaluated on their mastery of specific lab techniques (lab practical).

Data SummaryOur pre and post surveys did show an increase in student learning(on a scale from 1-5 with 1 being low and 5 being high). The average pre survey results were in the 2.5-3 range, but the post survey results were in the 4-4.5 range.

From the survey, the students utilized the class website and it helped with increasing learning. We also have a Google photo sharing site for class images that the students deemed helpful.

From the lab practical, however, students still average about 60% overall for fluorescent cell identification. I'd like to see this number improve.
Analysis SummaryStudents came into this course with more base knowledge, and were able to apply it. This makes sense since this is the second course in a series.

Lab practical skills need improvement.
Next Steps PlannedWhile the students showed concept learning through the pre and post survey analysis, we were concerned with the assessment of lab skills. The lab practical is mostly observation with students only identifying 60% correctly.

For Fall 2013, we will create a new lab practical to better address student learning of lab skills.

Changes

DetailsIn order to improve learning for the lab practical portion of the course, we emphasized the course website and fluorescent images on the Google site.

The lab practical assessment, however, remained the same.

Tentative Future Plans

TermFall 2013
Activities
  • Assessment (measurement) of outcomes
  • Implementation of planned changes and reassessment
More DetailsSince the Google image website has an interactive feature (students can leave comments about images posted) I will be requiring students to visit the site and share/comment. More exposure to viewing images and analyzing them hopefully will improve their lab skills in this area. Also, I am planning to change the lab practical itself to better reflect student learning.
