BTEC 21A - Basic Mammalian Cell Culture - Stage 5 - Carin Zimmerman

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
  • Pre & post surveys or tests
Assessment DescriptionStudents were evaluated on their mastery of specific lab techniques (lab practical) in a new and improved quantitative test.

Pre and post surveys were given for comparison of learning throughout the course

Data SummaryWhen we analyzed the student's lab skill performance using equipment which could quantitate their results, we found students did not perform as highly as expected (average student was off by 10%).

Our pre and post surveys showed a dramatic increase in student learning(on a scale from 1-5 with 1 being low and 5 being high). Most pre survey results were in the 1.5-2.5 range, but the post survey results were in the 4-4.5 range.
Analysis SummaryThe student learning for the main learning outcomes as described in the course outline showed an increase in student learning across the board in both sections of the course. We did notice a trend in that students who utilized the class website (lecture slides, links, extra articles on topics of interest) tended to have increased learning.

Students also felt that the text book was not used enough.
Next Steps PlannedFor this coming semester, I plan on emphasizing the website more and maybe requiring students to visit it and download an article so that they become familiar with it and use it more.

I am also using the text book more directly. The new teacher's edition of the text book came with powerpoint slides/images, which I am inserting into my old lectures.

For the lab practical, I will have the students practice the quantitative procedure more during the regular class. Although many students can master this technique quickly, the majority need more practice.

Implementation of planned changes and reassessment

More DetailsI will keep the new lab practical quantitative assessment but note if more practice during class improves student performance (less than 10% error).

By emphasizing the website and textbook, I hope to increase the student learning for each course learning outcome (pre and post survey assessment will stay the same).
