Data Summary | The qualitative anlaysis lab was stated by 15% of the students as being the least enjoyable lab. However, every student that passed the class score at 70% or higher on the laboratory report. |
Analysis Summary | This lab is often considered difficult, as students must individually use the NMR and IR, and determine some physical properties to help solve the structure of 2 unknown organic compounds. In addition, since the students are trying to solve the structure using their own data, students feel uncertain as the final answers cannot be easily checked with another resource (textbook , internet, etc...) This pass rate is consistent when compared to our analyis of exam questions that involved structure determination with spectroscopic analysis. The experiment provided students a hands-on experience with collecting their own data to solve the structure, rather than solving the structure from data provided to them (i.e. an exam). Overall the data collected by the students was quite good, despite them feeling less than confident about it. Based on my analysis, this student learning outcome was achieved. |

More Details | In surveys, students indicated difficulty with the understanding of the Diels-Alder lab. I hope to qive a more detailed review of material covered in a pre-requisite course, that will hopefully improved their understanding of the concept of the lab. |
