Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
  • Student satisfaction surveys
Assessment DescriptionAfter every class, students spend a few minutes reflecting on what they thought about the class sessions by answering a 1-2 prompts in a blue book which also serves as an attendance check. This provides feedback regarding students thoughts about how the class went for them and how it can be improved the next time for them.

Data SummaryThe 4 exams given were difficult, and for the first 2 exams which were from the test bank, only about 50% of the students scored passing at 60% accuracy. The last 2 exams I allowed use of open book, although half of the students did not purchase the book. About 80% of the students were able to pass the 2 exams with open book. The questions for the last 2 exams were not from the text bank.
Analysis SummaryThe material in the book is technical and has a lot of scientific referencing. Over 75% of students do not have a science background, but were taking the course for general interest. The questions in the tests required some scientific background. A grade of higher than 60% on the exams indicated outcome achievement.
Next Steps PlannedThe exams need to be revised to include questions that are not as scientific since the majority are not science majors. Also, some questions appear to be duplicating similar concepts, so these questions need to be eliminated and replaced with other questions testing different concepts.
