DetailsStudents need more preparation at the beginning of the semester in both expressive and receptive fingerspelling skills. One major assignment has been added to ensure students’ expressive fingerspelling proficiency, and additional formal assessments in the form of receptive quizzes have been added.

1. Students will research using the internet to find a PANGRAM – a sentence that contains all twenty-six letters of the alphabet. Students will prepare to fingerspell their sentence for the class at the second class meeting.

2. The department has been working with a developer who has created a receptive fingerspelling assessment. Using the internet or mobile device app, students are shown random fingerspelled words at varying speeds (slow, medium, fast, and Deaf). The fingerspelling tool can be set to a fixed number of characters (word length) at 3, 4, 5, 6, or random. At this point, we will use this tool during formal, in-class assessments (receptive fingerspelling quizzes) where students can view the tool as a class as it is projected onto a screen in the classroom and record their answers on paper. This tool is now ready and available to be incorporated into our “Moodle” online learning environment, and can record students’ progress scores. Instructors will be able to pre-determine a benchmark that students must achieve as part of their coursework. This assessment can be viewed at asl.ms
