CAD 191 - Adv. CAD: Rendering and Animation - Stage 2 - Lillian Crist

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
  • Student satisfaction surveys
Assessment DescriptionIt is easy to assess this course because about 1/3 of the time is spent on an original project, without step-by-step instructions. Makes it very clear whether the student has grasped the material and is able to apply it analytically. My lectures were ongoing but after the first 8 weeks, my lectures were meant to guide them through particular phases of a project.

Face-to-face meetings

Data SummaryStudents from a previous semester suggested minor improvements which I incorporated into my materials. Most of my assessment was based on a survey where students expressed their opinions about the SLOs. There were no particularly weak SLOs, in their opinion.
Analysis SummaryStudents achieved most outcomes (not the team-building outcome) if they could demonstrate proficiency in their original project. And 98% of them did demonstrate proficiency.
Next Steps PlannedI planned to improve my handouts on materials and lighting, and I did improve them by creating summary sheets that highlight the main points covered in more detailed handouts.
Learning OutcomesAll except the team SLO and the presentation SLO:

Demonstrate fundamental skills using 3D software for modeling, rendering, and animation.

Strategize for most effective techniques.

Strategize for most effective use of software. Distinguish strengths of 3ds Max Design software vs. other 3d modeling softwares.

Design and create an original project, a portfolio piece, in the form of a 20-second animation walkthrough and a few still renderings.

Changes

DetailsI created two new handouts titled "Basic Materials" and "Basic Lighting" - both were only 2 pages (double-sided sheets) which highlighted the main points for two very broad topics, sort of an answer to FAQ I had encountered in previous semesters.
Learning OutcomesAll except the team SLO and the presentation SLO as indicated in previous answer (6f).

Tentative Future Plans

Termwhenever it is offered again - uncertain schedule
Activities
  • Revision of outcomes and assessment methods (measurements)
  • Assessment (measurement) of outcomes
  • Implementation of planned changes and reassessment, student focus groups
More DetailsI plan to use assessment surveys, exam questions, and direct observation as always, but I plan to add student focus groups as a method of assessment, and I plan to create at least one more summary handout of FAQ.

Additional Highlights

This is one of my favorite experiences as a teacher, to teach this inspiring course and to see the results, to harvest the creative talent among the students. The students love this course, as I have often heard from them. It is fun. The highlight is the final presentations: each student presents a 20-second animation + rendered stills, which they have been working on for 6+ weeks. As a teacher, I love finding out that every single one of them has a unique capacity for creativity, that even they are sometimes unaware of. Some feel the task is daunting, and I find that when I break it down into steps for them, that they discover they do have a unique interest and I can help motivate them to express that interest. Some say they just aren't creative, and I just ask them what do you like to do, what are your interests in real life -- let's create an ideal version of that.
