Data Summary | 15 students received As, five received Bs, four Cs and five Fs. This tells me that except for the five Fs the overall comprehension of the SLOs was high across the board. The number of As in this class has gone up, and the number of Fs has gone down. Note: I find online courses have a higher proportion of Fs as I think it becomes an out of sight out of mind situation since the don't physically have to be in a classroom once or more times a week. |
Analysis Summary | There was an overall increase in student participation in the participatory forums, blog and Facebook page, which is where I saw a lot of engaged and thoughtful learning happening. I also noted an increase in comprehension of linking the assigned readings with the assigned viewing of the documentaries. This can still become stronger however and I do believe that this can be facilitated by further honing the syllabus guidelines. |

Changes
Details | In January 2013, prior to launching Cine 19, I updated some of the homework assignment descriptions and I spent a lot more time explaining the nature of working in an online environment and describing the necessity of working on all of the different assignments and how they interrelate. I also have put more emphasis on the importance of class participation via engaged dialogue throughout the course of the class. I also made it very clear that they receive extra credit for engagement in the interactive forums, our blog and our Facebook page. Over the semester I tracked the improved responses and I evaluated 1-overall comprehension of the weekly assignments based on their short essays, 2- increased class participation and how it effected their learning experience 3 - asked the students more directly about what was the most satisfying part of their learning experience. |
---|---|
Learning Outcomes | Student engagement in the forums, blog and Facebook postings was a lot more lively and engaged. This also offered less advanced and mature students a more informal way of writing and responding which increased their overall comprehension. Many students responded that their learning experience was improved and more engaging and fun with the increased interactivity. |
