Implementation of planned changes and reassessment

More DetailsAfter departmental discussions re SLOs & students' ability to actually finish the class in its previous incarnation, I rewrote this class as part of a design program overhaul effort by all the design teachers. The revised course outline with new SLOs (measurable!), revised content and new student projects was approved by curriculum committee March 2013. This will be the first offering of the class.

I will assess if the revised content

(a) is more achievable by students with intermediate sewing skills,

(b) improves student completion rates

(c) answers student demand for menswear techniques

(d) improves student understanding of complex construction sequences

Additional Highlights

The program-level SLO mapping process led our department to seriously reconsider what students need to know to work in the industry, identify gaps in our coursework, and ensure continuity between beginning, intermediate & advanced courses related to certain industry skill sets. As a result we have revised most of our outlines, written new courses, created new electives. We are in the process of creating a series of job-specific certificates of 18 or fewer units that will be stackable. Together they will equal our current Fashion Design AA or Certificate coursework. Separately, they can serve as job qualifications and student completion milestones.
