FASH 15B - Apparel Construction II - Stage 5 - Wendy Miller

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
  • Capstone projects or final summative assignments
Assessment DescriptionSLOs for each sewing project discussed throughout each lecture/demo, and students were asked to relate the elements of each garment to the SLOs. This helped students prioritize their work and focus on the most important aspects of each garment.

Began implementing changes to projects based on revised COOR (approved by curriculum committee March 2013).

Changes in projects, rubrics, Insight class website & constant re-iteration of SLOs throughout semester resulted in very high student retention AND satisfactory completion rates for Spring 2013 semester.

Data SummaryMost students finished the class, finished the projects, and met ALL the SLOs satisfactorily.
Analysis SummaryGrading & assessment criteria for all projects (sewn garments and samples) were clearly stated, with each element earning a certain number of points. Criteria generally consist of project completeness, accuracy, timeliness, neatness, and inclusion of all required elements.
Next Steps PlannedFall 2013 class will be based on revised COOR, which has more clearly stated SLOs, and slightly different projects. That will be piloted, and I will assess if the revisions actually improve student learning & advancement within the context of the entire Fashion Design program.

Changes

Detailssee previous response -- some changes to last required project of the semester. Instead of making a full pair of stretch woven jeans, students made a sample jeans front that covered the fly front zipper, pockets, belt loops and waistband. In previous years, students spent too much time trying to fit the jeans, and not enough time focusing on the skills elements that actually fulfill the SLOs.

Design students tend to focus on design in all the apparel construction classes, although the SLOs for these classes are about sewing skills. By making something a non-garment sample, it frees the student up from their aesthetic concerns and requires them to practice the skills being taught.
Learning OutcomesMore students completed their projects and focused on what they actually needed to learn.
