Assessment

Assessment Methods

Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs

Assessment DescriptionMethod: Each exam question was tallied for the number of correct responses. Those questions which showed a response of less than 70% was examined for faults in the presentation of the question.

Responses were analysed for issues related to language proficiency , misreading the question or if response was based upon actual misconception.

Student submitted Confidence rankings were analysed against final grades for correlation.

Data SummaryMany of the questions that had low responses tend to be abstract and require a good comprehension of English. Some of these questions were designed to test ability to use concepts in a context similar but different from the class content. This tended to be a challenge for many ESL students.

Math calculations remain a challenge for many students . The only solution that I foresee is more practice and earlier presentation of the dilution math.

Overall outcomes :

85% of students enrolled achieved a minimum or better proficiency evidenced by an aggregate grade of C or better

15% of all students enrolled showed marginal proficiency of a D grade

Confidence rankings correlation to grade outcomes were inconclusive . Although a modest correlation was seen statistically the number of contradictory rankings were equal at both extremes ( high confidence low outcome or Low confidence high outcome).

Next Steps PlannedThese changes will be implemented in Fall 2013:

Class content will be modified to emphasize definitions. Homework will be introduced to reinforce concepts.

Reading guide should be revised to ask the students to define what a BT crop is.

Questions on GMOs will be reworded on the exam to take care of the comprehension problem.

The term equilibration needs to be elaborated in more simplistic terms.

Students show a profound lack of understanding of arithmetic and blindly use C1V1 = C2V2 formula. Concept needs more exercise in take home work and practice in hands on work in proposed open lab time.

The idea of denaturation and native conformation still escapes some students :Present wire bundle model as a short hands on exercise to present a physical model for this concept.
