Assessment Description | In the F’ 2012 semester, students did well on test questions when asked about camera features. Although much of the class showed proficiency in concepts of cameras, the teacher observed that students struggled operating the camera, even after repeated demonstration. The teacher has refocused the evaluated SLO from Fall 2012 to encompass operation for Spring 2013. Assessment Methods: Students completed and turned in a handout where they worked in the lab to learn features and operation of the camera. Then, students were given the corrected answers. As part of a late semester quiz, students took a hands-on competency test to demonstrate that they know how to: white balance, expose, focus, frame and perform camera moves. |
Learning Outcomes | B. Operate video and associated equipment, including: audio console, video switcher, lighting board, cameras, graphics/character generators and video file servers. |

Analysis Summary | By the semester’s end, all students were able to competently operate studio cameras and features in the following areas: white balance, exposure, focus, framing, panning and tilting, and zooming. One area where students did particularly well was focusing. Constantly reminding students to calibrate focus led to success of internalizing this concept. Students still had problems with releasing pan and tilt locks before performing moves in some cases, and students sometimes struggled with being efficient with exposure. |
Next Steps Planned | Assessment showed excellent levels of proficiency. A new slo will be selected next time. |
