Data SummaryPre-Survey results for Spring 2013 showed correct answers on specific questions ranging from 31% to 87%.

Post-Survey results for Spring 2013 showed correct answers on specific questions ranging from 42% to 77%.
Analysis SummaryAnalysis of Spring 2013 pre and post survey results took place at the beginning of the Fall 2013 semester (8/26/13). Outcomes were evaluated on an individual question basis, looking at both percentage of improvement in the post-survey compared to the pre-survey and overall % of students able to answer the question correctly. Comparison was also made with Fall 2012 survey results. Survey questions addressed conceptual and factual knowledge.

While 3 of the 7 questions in the post-survey indicated a basic level of student achievement of the outcome (73-77% answered correctly), the other 4 questions showed only 42-69% of students answering correctly.

Student performance on question #7, which had been revised, showed a 7% improvement in the percentage of students answering correctly as compared to the Fall 2012 survey. Otherwise, improvements from Fall were unremarkable.

The question--#2--on which students (both Fall and Spring) scored the lowest was determined to be inappropriate as it related to foundational information predating the period covered by History 12B and emphasized by only one instructor.
Next Steps Planned1) If used again in the future, specific questions on the objective survey need to be even more thoroughly vetted to make sure they aren't biased towards a more positive result for students instructed by the teacher who particularly stresses the content or uses evaluation based on objective questions.

2) Instructors questioned the usefulness of the objective survey as a common assessment method (one instructor found it valuable for her own course) and decided to adopt a rubric for Fall 2013 course SLO assessment. There currently seems to be greater consensus on this as a mode of common assessment as compared to the objective survey option. SLO"F" will be assessed using a common rubric.

3) Instructors will be meeting mid-semester (Fall) to discuss possible revision of course SLOs.

4)All history instructors will be using a rubric for assessing one of our PSLOs so we will have TWO rubric evaluations to evaluate and compare for effectiveness this semester.
Learning OutcomesSLO "F": "Identify, discuss and analyze the women's rights movement from 1890 to the present." Additionally, we are refining our outcomes assessment process which will, hopefully, support all SLOs in the future.

Tentative Future Plans

TermFall 2013
Activities
  • Revision of outcomes and assessment methods (measurements)
  • Analysis and discussion of assessment data and next steps
More DetailsWe have already analyzed SLO survey data from Spring 2013 (analysis and discussion took place 8/26/13), As stated above, plans include a common rubric to assess SLO "F" and a meeting mid-semester to consider revision/refinement of course SLOs.

Additional Highlights

There is definitely more dialog among instructors and we are learning from each other as we navigate the SLO assessment process. Assessments lead us to critical evaluation of methods and SLOs themselves.
