BCST 124 - Digital Audio Production - Stage 5 - Mark Altin

Assessment

Assessment Methods

Student satisfaction surveys

Assessment DescriptionTo improve student understanding of the technical and theoretical aspects of my class relating to Digital Audio, I decided to focus on developing two types of teaching aids:

(1) Enhanced power points that contain animation, audio examples, and more metered approach to slide design (concepts are written in short easily digestible chunks, rather than long unwieldy definitions that fill a slide with text).

(2)Video “screencasts” of the technical lectures given during class time where available to students afterwards. This was to allow students to focus on thinking about the concepts and engage in the discussion during class time while concurrently reducing anxiety and stress some students feel if they aren’t able to keep up with extensive note taking.

Testing For Results

The actions taken above were instituted for the first half of the semester, the second half was taught with my traditional materials. On the last day of the semester, I gave all attending students a survey in which students had four choices: Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, Strongly Disagree. A fifth choice of “NA - Not Applicable was also available for the last question (in cases where the student didn’t take advantage of reference videos).

There were five statements on the survey:

1. My knowledge of digital audio theory has improved due to taking this class.

2. My confidence in editing in a DAW has improved as a result of taking this class.

3. My confidence with audio signal flow has improved as a result of taking this class.

4. Power Points aided in my understanding of the classes technical concepts.

5. Screen captures movies of the lectures aided in my understanding of the class’s technical concepts.

Data SummarySurvey Findings

Statement 1 - My knowledge of digital audio theory has improved due to taking this class.

46% - Strongly Agreed, 54%- Agreed, 0%- Disagreed, Strongly Disagreed

Statement 2 - My confidence in editing in a DAW has improved as a result of taking this class.

62% - Strongly Agree, 38%- Agree, 0%- Disagree, Strongly Disagree

Statement 3 - My confidence with audio signal flow has improved as a result of taking this class.

23% - Strongly Agree, 77%- Agree, 0%- Disagree, Strongly Disagree

Statement 4 - Power Points aided in my understanding of the classes technical concepts.

46% - Strongly Agree, 54%- Agree, 0%- Disagree, Strongly Disagree

Statement 5 - Screen captures movies of the lectures aided in my understanding of the class’s technical concepts.

30% - Strongly Agree, 38%- Agree, 8% - Disagree, 0% - Strongly Disagree,

23% - NA
Analysis SummaryIn addition to the predefined responses, I allowed space between questions for students to enter in any additional comments. Most comments were positively reinforcing that they learned better with the enhancements I made in the first half of the semester when compared to the topics covered in the second half.

Conclusions

By normalizing the data between Strongly Agree and Agree for statements 1-4, I can see some areas within this SLO that can still be improved (Signal Flow, for instance).

I will be looking into these areas and refine my lecture materials.

With the support for the new lecture layout, I will update the technical lectures on the second half of my course to follow the same design principles and record all conducted lectures with screencast software and a bluetooth headset.

I will also refer to these video recording for any students that missed or forgot a specific topic.
