CDEV 120 - Special Education K-12 - Stage 5 - Tracy Burt

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Student self-assessments (such as reflective journals and surveys)
  • Student satisfaction surveys
Assessment DescriptionStudents rated their understanding of 3 SLOs and I assessed their mastery of 5 SLOs based on a Final Assessment. Reading Quotes & Notes assignments, reflections and group work in class was also assessed for relationship to SLOs.
Learning Outcomes Demonstrate an understanding of legal rights of children with disabilities and their parents (including the IEP).

 Assess sensitivity to children with disabilities and their families.

 Identify collaboration strategies for working with parents and other professionals.

 Understand issues related to diverse children with special needs aged K-12 and create inclusive activities for children with special needs.

 Plan positive behavior supports and assess possible underlying causes of “challenging” behaviors.

Data SummarySurvey: All students rated their understanding of the 3 SLO's queried from 5-7.

Final Assessment: Of the 11 students who completed the Final Assessment, all but 1 one demonstrated proficiency or high profiency in at least 3 SLOs. 1 student demonstrated proficiency in 3, and 9 in 4-5 SLOs.
Analysis SummaryStudent mastery of 4-5 SLOs was demonstrated on the final by over 80% of students. The students who did not complete the final will not pass the class, and I am not able to accurately assess their mastery of the SLOs, though because of their engagement in class I believe these four students would all be able to demonstrate proficiency on at least 3 SLOs.
Next Steps PlannedBased on the student survey data, I need to add more content related to analyzing the causes of challenging behavior and planning behavioral supports. These changes will happen in Spring 2014, the next time the class may be offered.
Learning Outcomes Plan positive behavior supports and assess possible underlying causes of “challenging” behaviors.

Changes

DetailsWrote a brand new Final Assessment and created a rubric for the Final Assessment so that each question mapped to at least one SLO. I also analyzed the syllabus and content for alignment with SLOs, and planned changes to the official course SLOs when we can make them with the Curriculum Committee.
