GNBS 119 - Introduction to Business - Stage 4 - Susan Berston

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
  • Student satisfaction surveys
  • Pre & post surveys or tests
Assessment Description* For a copy of the syllabus, go to www.tomakeaprofit.com

* Students are required to take three exams equivalent to 75% of their grade. Assessment of students' grades were analyzed to calculate the percentage who earned greater than 70% (on average) for the three exams.

* Homework assignments, valued at 25% of the grade, consisted of two case study critiques (including critical thinking) and write-ups (1,000 words each), and a stock portfolio assignment over six weeks to pick and track stocks utilizing a simulated investment website called www.howthemarketworks.com. Students were not graded on the portfolio gains, but more on participation (assignment can be found on www.tomakeaprofit.com/homework).

*Students were given informal satisfaction surveys indicating ways to improve material retention and the course. Many reported positive outcomes from the teaching assistant (volunteer tutors) program started in Fall 2012.

* Students were required to take pre and post surveys and tests for each chapter through Pearson publishing MyBizLab.com . Tailored instruction to pinpoint weak areas is at the heart of this new online system.

* Quizzes were given on a weekly basis on current events (to encourage reading), and on material covered the previous week (to encourage students to keep up with reading).
