Data SummaryI developed a rubric to grade laboratory notebooks. I chose two areas to assess whether students were properly documenting thier results in lab.

50% of students did not make note of visible proteins being extracted in the organic solvent used to purify a DNA sample.

62% of the students correctly made conclusions about the purity of their sample using the 260/280 calculation of spectrophotometric readings obtained in lab.
Analysis SummaryProper documentation in a laboratory notebook requires notation of changes in solutions as one follows the protocol. 50% of the students did not record the above observation. Thus they either noted it or not.

The whole purpose of using a spectrophotometer in DNA isolation is to quantify the DNA and assess its purity. 38% of the students did not calculate the purity of the DNA nor report it in their conclusions.
Next Steps PlannedI will develop an extra handout on proper keeping of a laboratory notebook so that students realize the importance of noting observations as they are following the protocol and the importance of not only obtaining data, but using mathematical models to interpret the data as well in the form of a conclusion.
Learning Outcomes1) Apply the principles of proper documentation handling in experimental data collection and record keeping.

2) Apply critical thinking in data analysis including statistical and graphical analysis, and in the interpretation of the experimental results.

3) Define and use SI units to measure mass, length, volume, temperature, etc..

Tentative Future Plans

TermFall 2013
Activities
  • Assessment (measurement) of outcomes
  • Analysis and discussion of assessment data and next steps
  • Implementation of planned changes and reassessment
More DetailsI will develop an extra handout on proper record keeping emphasizing the importance of noting changes that occur while a student is doing any particular procedure and the importance of not just collecting data, but analyzing it.

I will go over this handout with the students in class and elicit a class discussion to verify that the students see the relevance to proper documentation.
