BCST 110 - Writing for Broadcast Media - Stage 5 - Dr. Malcolm Cecil
Assessment
Assessment Methods | Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances) |

Assessment Description | I decided to focus on the specific outcome of improving writing techniques in the feature stories created by students for radio and television. Students need to improve their ability to write clear, accurate and grammatically correct copy in a conversational tone that follows broadcast style. This is an important skill required for success as a non-fiction script writer. Summary of assessment: My assessment was based on two script writing assignments, with rubrics. The pre-assessment was based on our first assignment, which is to write a script for a sixty second radio voice over (approximately 120 words). I analyzed the results for errors in grammar and broadcast writing style. The post-assessment was based on our second assignment, which is to write a script for television. Since this was a much longer assignment; I assessed errors in grammar and broadcast writing style in the first 120 words of the script. |

Data Summary | Evaluation of Results: The results of the assessment show that performance in the post-assessment was actually slightly worse than in the pre-assessment. |
Analysis Summary | As the class dwindled in size, a core of international students and others whose first language is NOT English became increasingly prominent in the sample. These students were generally competent in formatting their scripts for broadcast but their errors in elementary English grammar brought the score of the group down. |
Next Steps Planned | I intend to address the problem by having students partner and peer-evaluate their scripts before turning them in. I will attempt to pair native English speakers with non-English speaking students. I will place a lot of emphasis on finding and fixing elementary grammar and format problems during peer evaluation. This will reinforce the importance of developing adequate basic writing techniques as the foundation for writing for broadcast, which is a challenge for everyone. I also intend to confer with my colleagues who give writing assignments in their classes to find other solutions to this problem. |
