Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
  • Student satisfaction surveys
Assessment DescriptionStudent Anonymous Survey--to rate all five SLO's--rating each SLO separately where 0 (zero) is the least effective and 10 is the most effective. Part II of the survey, asked for feedback on how effective specific teaching methodologies worked. In Part II, 'responses' were either a combination of the rating system, and 'written feedback' or one or the other (written OR rated 0--10).

EX: Part II

#9. Rate the 'classroom dynamics' did you feel that your ideas, comments were 'heard,' was it a 'safe' place to express a variety of viewpoints? Comments? (after you rate)

Data SummaryThe average or 'mean' score for all 11 questions, per the 0 to 10 rating system, scored 9.1 (lowest, first ten surveys) & 9.4 for the last 14 surveys, which is conservatively 9.2 out of 10. The lowest averaged question was #7, "How would you rate the in-class teaching methods, as it helped you understand the goals above? Scored approx.8.7--the highest was, SLO #5, "Evaluate critically, both orally and in writing, the works studied." Score averaged: 9.6.
Analysis SummaryStill need to compare the Final Exam scores with the Survey, to assess actual effectiveness via testing versus student's perceptions. Also: to note the % of students who withdrew from the class after doing poorly on the Mid-Term, etc. to get a fuller 'view.'
Next Steps PlannedAt this pt. I plan to incorporate more in-class writing, to help better prepare students for the mostly written, 'critical thinking & film analysis' testing methods.

By having students 'respond to film, by writing for 5 minutes, in class.
