ARCH 102 - Architectural Design II - Stage 5 - Andrew Chandler, AIA

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
  • Learning Portfolio
Assessment DescriptionAssignment was a full term design project. The evaluation matrix in the SLO folder in the ARCH front office houses that matrix for viewing.
Learning OutcomesSLO A: Create architectural solutions to set of project requirements

SLO E: Understand how architects create sets of functional and expressive spaces.

Data SummarySLO A was evaluated on 6 criteria. The summary matrix is in the SLO binder in the dept. front office. All areas were competent and above but Criteria 4,( evidence of circulation development) was the weakest. 50% of the students were competent and below. This needs to get better.

SLO E was evaluated on 6 criteria. The summary matrix is in the SLO binder in the dept. front office. All areas were competent and above but Criteria 1 (circulation as part of the expressiveness of the design) was the weakest overall.
Analysis SummarySLO A: Over the entire spectrum of criteria, 71% of students were good or excellent, indicating that the students were showing evidence of all six criteria for the SLO above merely competent.

SLO E: Over then entire spectrum of criteria for this SLO E, 68% were good or excellent, indicating that students were showing evidence of all six criteria for the SLO above merely competent.

HIGHEST SCORES (good and excellent)

SLO A:

Criteria 2: Site response

Criteria 5: Integration of concept, program and site

Criteria 6: Response to gravity and structure

SLO E:

Criteria 5: Intention to relate spaces to concept

Criteria 6: Derivation of functional spaces through gestural language

LOWEST SCORES: (competent and below competent)

SLO A:

Criteria 1: gestural language development

Criteria 4: Evidence of circulation development

SLO E:

Criteria 1: Importance of circulation as part of expressiveness

CRiteria 2: Relates function to site
Next Steps PlannedOverall, the class is meeting these two SLO's as evidenced in the 6 criteria developed for each SLO.

The weakest area is clearly revolving around circulation development. I recommend focusing more lectures and showing circulation strategies directly as examples to the students.

The other area of improvement is in the development of gestural development. While it's still good, it could be beefed up. Spending more time on it is an option but that needs to be developed around the needs of the other SLO's.

Changes

DetailsThe Fall 2012 SLO evaluation showed the same problem for SLO A. However I feel I addressed it better in Spring 2013 by focusing more on t circulation development in the critiques. Obviously, this was not enough! I recommend whoever is teaching this course in Fall 2013 to focus MORE formally on circulation as a topic. I was relying on a more organic integration which is not getting through!

I also recommend a much higher evidence of digital production. I think this is still MY lowest area of accomplishment in the entire list of SLO's. I recommend evaluating the SLO relating to digital skills in Fall 2013.
Learning OutcomesRefer to question 8a.

Tentative Future Plans

TermFall 2013
Activities
  • Assessment (measurement) of outcomes
  • Analysis and discussion of assessment data and next steps
  • Implementation of planned changes and reassessment
More DetailsI will not be teaching this course in Fall 2013. Refer to question 8a for advice to address the shortcomings of the SLO achievements from Fall 2012 and Spring 2013.
