Assessment

Assessment Methods

Pre & post surveys or tests

Assessment DescriptionDuring the last week of February, the students in Zool 10 were administered a quiz prior and after lectures covering the organ systems found in animals including humans. The quizzes consisted of ten multiple-choice questions (each with three distractors), and neither of the quizzes were pre-announced to the class.

Examples of questions:

• Nerve cells have more than one:

A. cell membrane B. axon C. dendrite D. nucleus

• Propioception are the sense organs that detect:

A. oxygen B. chemicals C. body position D. gravity

• The sense of olfaction is located in the nose and:

A. ears B. eyes C. tongue D. skin
Learning OutcomesThe different organ systems found in animals and how they contribute to survival were described.

Data Analysis

Data Shared With

Faculty and staff within our department

Data Sharing Methods
  • Face-to-face meetings
  • Email
  • Shared document files
Data SummaryThe mean score for the 32 students who completed the pre-test was 43%. The mean score for the 35 students who completed the post-test was 60%, an improvement of 17%. This post-quiz score was slightly lower than the mean scores on the four written exams (between 63-70%) during this semester, possibly because the class was not instructed to review the lecture material in preparation for the post-test.
Analysis SummaryIn general, there was higher performance for all questions in the post-test than in the pre-test. This was especially the case for questions dealing with the nervous system, which was covered in greater detail during lecture. Conversely students demonstrated only slight improvement in the two questions dealing with the chemical nature of the endocrine and excretory systems.
Next Steps PlannedMore class time and attention during lectures on topics dealing with the chemical nature of the endocrine and excretory systems.
