ANTH 1 - Introduction to Biological Anthropology - Stage 4 - Niccolo Caldararo

Assessment

Assessment Methods
  • Analysis of exam, quiz, or homework items linked to specific SLOs
  • Assignments based on rubrics (such as essays, projects, and performances)
  • Direct observation of performances, practical exams, group work
  • Pre & post surveys or tests, test question assessment process, how many questions are answered correctly, now does rewording affect outcomes; focus teaching for core concepts and redesign of test structure and lecture materials as dependent modalities
Assessment Description1) analysis of testing materials

2) pre and post test analysis

3) cohort identification of class (e.g., were students studying in groups or independently?

Data Summary3 questions were found to be commonly marked incorrectly by students in the Quiz, 2 in the midterm and 5 on the final. These questions were reexamined and rewritten as well as teaching of these concept sections were reevaluated given student responses in their required corrections of their answers.

Students improved responses to questions in the post-examination at a rate of 67% so this is interpreted to indicate that rewriting and student reexamination of questions and their answers had a positive effect in learning.
Analysis SummaryGrades in testing were collated with student correction exercises to determine if students understood answers clearly. In most cases there was a correlation, overall improvement of 84%.
Next Steps PlannedReassessment of student correction exercises and monitoring of exam questions every semester.

Changes

DetailsTeaching of core concepts was reexamined and rewritten or designed where indicated by student improvement. Powerpoint segments were changed to match variations in student responses.

Description

Proficiency

Students understand the model and can apply it to satisfactorily predict or explain behaviors or phenomena. (A passing ability.)

Developing More than 67% of students demonstrated general knowledge of key concepts

Students are developing an understanding of the model and the commonly occurring behaviors or phenomena it describes, but students cannot yet use the model to effectively make predictions or explain the behaviors or phenomena. More than 80% had some grasp of general concepts and could articulate some level of knowledge when given basic exercises to complete

No Evidence

There is no evidence that students are aware of the model or the types of behaviors or phenomena that the model predicts or explains. (Includes students who didn’t complete the assessment. Less than 10% of students would fall into this category.

CriteriaReview of pre and post examinations, homework, written essay materials and corrections of test materials students were asked to produce after exams.
Extra DetailsMost students, 52% express frustration with time available for study. Many work full time and have child rearing duties or care of elderly relatives. Living situations do no provide many students with areas for study or an environment for quiet study.
