Improvement Details

DetailsIn one section of PHYC 4A, the first course in the Physics sequence, instructor Leilah McCarthy continued implementing the use of personal response systems and discourse management, which are new teaching techniques for which she received training at an American Association of Physics Teachers workshop.

Assessment Methods

MethodsAn assessment was given to all the PHYC 4A and PHYC 4D students in fall 2013. We will continue to give this same assessment through spring 2015 when the first group of students that were taught with the new teaching techniques in PHYC 4A will be taking PHYC 4D. We will compare the results of the assessment from the students whose classes used the new teaching techniques vs the students whose classes used the more traditional physics teaching methods.

Assessment Data Discussion and Analysis

TermSpring 2014, Fall 2013
How and With Whomother faculty in the department
Number Assessed252
Data SummaryOf the 10 questions, 5 assessed PSLO 1 and 5 assessed PSLO 2. Four or more correct was considered proficient. Two or three correct was considered developing. Zero or one correct was considered no evidence.

Overall combined results for 4A and 4D (Fall 2013, Spring 2014)

PSLO 1:

Proficient: 31%, 34%

Developing: 49%, 52%

No Evidence: 20%, 14%

PSLO 2:

Proficient: 28%, 30%

Developing: 43%, 55%

No Evidence: 28%, 15%

Also interesting to note that in fall 2013, the 4A students outperformed the 4D students, whereas in spring 2014 the 4D students outperformed the 4A students. It will be interesting to see if there is a trend in the future.
