Assessment Methods

MethodsI assessed student learning outcome F: "Select proper tools to create desired lighting effects".

Students were given a portrait assignment in which they were to use one or more light modifying tools such as reflectors, diffusers, and gobos. Each student was assigned an assistant to help manage the tools. The assessment of photographs was primarily based on the effectiveness and appropriateness of the light modifying tools.

Assessment Data Discussion and Analysis

TermSpring 2014
How and With WhomI discussed my findings with the students both in written form and in class discussion.
Number Assessed21
Data SummaryPoints were given for lighting, including use of light modifiers, creativity, technical ability, and punctuality. Fourteen of twenty-one students scored 90% or higher. No one scored lower than 80% It was obvious that the great majority of students were able to use the light modifying tools satisfactorily. The one area that could use improvement is in the creativity category. I think that I should show more examples of what I consider successful, creative portraits.
Planned ImprovementsI will show more visual aids and include greater explanation of why I value certain images over others.

DetailsI would like to revise my grading criteria and the weight given to each category.
HighlightsGrading criteria that include specific categories and point values help students to focus on what they must do to achieve success in each of the photographic assignments.
