Assessment Progress
Stage | 5. Course/program/service has undergone at least one full closed-loop cycle – implemented improvements have been assessed. Process is now on a continual cycle of repeated assessment and review. |

Number of Outcomes | 8 |
Number of Outcomes Assessed to Date | 8 |
Assessment and Analysis Frequency | Every Fall Semester when course is offered |
Improvements
Details | Due to space available for students to work in the Studio, students work in groups. In fact, four groups work at the same time in different sections of the Studio. As professional photographers students are required to work as part of a group - Art Directors, etc. Therefore, we have implemented at the beginning of the semester a "Group Dynamic Exercise" to assist in creating cohesion, and this process is now paying off with more successful group relations and results. |

Assessment and Analysis Review
Assessment Methods | As mentioned previously, one of the most critical side benefits of students working together while in school is that they will need to be able to work as part of a team once they leave school. The method used was a simple one. Early in the semester students were given a series of exercises that placed a fair amount of stress on them. It tested the limits of their knowledge. They were told to work together to complete this exercise and would receive a single group grade. The completed exercise could not be turned in until everyone had signed off on it. I sat in on a significant portion of each exercise and could therefore identify the more aggressive and shy students. I therefore knew how to assist each student as the semester progressed. |

When Was Data Gathered? | This data was collected during the first three weeks of class. |
Discussion Logistics | I did not discuss this process with anyone. As I sat in on each student's Group Dynamic Exercise, I made notes of those student I would need to assist in being more assertive and did so as the semester progressed. |
Number Assessed | 10 |
Data and Analysis Summary | What I learned is something we all know. In any group of two or more people, some will assert themselves more than others. This group is generally no larger than 10%. Left unchecked they will dominate the group and the less assertive students would learn less. Their numbers tend to be 10% or less. But they matter to me. |
Future Improvements | Because this exercise allows me to see students under stress, there is a great deal I can learn about them as individuals. The only thing I intend to do differently is to look for ways to improve this exercise, and I will indicate that in future reports. |
Future Plans
Term | Fall 2015 |
---|---|
Details | The plan is to continue to do what we are currently doing. And also to recognize that our students are now beginning to secure positions in major corporations using their photography experience that they learned at CCSF. As a result, we will include some of those features in our future classes. |
Extra
Details | Some fairly amazing results have in part resulted from this class. For example, Kathryn Friedman who took this class just a few years ago wrote to thank me for what she learned here and to inform me that she is now the "Photo Editor" for ELLE Magazine in New York City, and one of their top photographers. Likewise, Samantha Cooper and Jennifer Otero-Lee are now world-wide Photo Editors for Air B&B. The results are here, we simply have to keep doing it and be able to update our equipment. |
