Improvements
Details | I encouraged students to recognize the importance of setting goals by introducing the following observation: A Harvard University study showed that 83% of alumni surveyed had no goals, 14% had goals but did not write them down, and only 3% had specific written goals. The study showed that the 14% group made 3 times the income as the 83% group and the 3% group made 10 times as much! They were then given an assignment to write their goals. |

Assessment and Analysis Review
Assessment Methods | Students were assigned a paper to describe their goals in photography. They were to include at least 2 steps (sub-goals) that would lead them to their ultimate goal(s). Neatness, spelling and grammar were scrutinized. |

When Was Data Gathered? | Within the first quarter of the semester |
Discussion Logistics | Students |
Number Assessed | 16 |
Data and Analysis Summary | Over eighty-seven percent of the class was able to describe their photography goals. Over eighty-seven percent included at least two sub-goals. Fifty percent of the students submitted neat papers. Twenty-five percent were satisfactory. Twenty-five percent were less than satisfactory, regarding neatness. Fifty percent of the class exhibited deficiencies in spelling and grammar. About twelve percent were exemplary, regarding spelling and grammar. |
Future Improvements | Students had very little trouble in expressing goals. However, describing goals in a professional manner, i.e., with faultless spelling and grammar, proved to be a challenge for most. The assignment paper did not designate a point value to spelling and grammar. In the future, it might be something to consider. Photo 130 is likely to be offered in the Fall 2015 semester. That would be the earliest I can adjust assignment. |

Details | I would like to find a solution to help students improve their spelling and grammar skills. I've talked to a few colleagues who have encountered similar results. Perhaps I should talk to instructors outside my department who can offer suggestions that have worked for them. |
