Improvements

DetailsStudents entering PHOT50A have little knowledge of using proper MLA citations - which should be covered in pre-requisite courses. Thus, I continued to refine the MLA citations exercise given at the beginning of the semester. Students attend a library workshop in person or online and then complete an MLA exercise. Then, they implement proper MLA citations throughout the semester in all of their assignments. This semester I added an additional assignment early on to reinforce these skills.

Assessment and Analysis Review

Assessment MethodsAssignments including the "MLA exercise" , midterm paper and Exhibition assignments were used. Final closed loop results culminated from the final Exhibition assignment which allowed students to showcase their refined skills as a result of practice from earlier exercises.
When Was Data Gathered? The Data was gathered both at the beginning and end of the course. Significant improvement was noted at the end of the course.
Discussion LogisticsI discussed my data with librarian Kate Connell as we intend to implement these assignments into a show at the CCSF library. I also discussed outcomes with colleagues and the matriculation office which resulted in update pre-requisite requirements. Laura Walsh from ESL also provided additional support for ESL student success.

Data and Analysis Summary76% of students met the outcomes with a total of 85% or higher. The other 34% of students did not attempt the assignment and failed the course due to lack of attendance and assignment completion.
Future ImprovementsThis is a closed loop assessment - future plans include moving on to assessing other Major Learning Outcomes.

Program Review Request

Extra

DetailsAs a result of this course students have designed citations and an "arm chair" exhibition commentary on the collection of Photographic Books in the Rosenburg Library. This selection will be on view as part of CCSFs 75th Anniversary of the photography department show in the Library Spring 2015. In addition, one student made the discovery of a still living photographer who studied with Ansel Adams. In collaboration with the African American Studies Department - there will be a lecture by this photographer as well as show in the CCSF Photography gallery to celebrate Black History month.
