Assessment Methods

MethodsA. Set up to use and operate laboratory equipment in a safe manner.

B. Evaluate relevant observations and measurements to confirm what has been learned in the lecture.

C. Demonstrate the ability to work with lab partners to perform laboratory experiments.

The course outline for PHYC 2BL was revised this semester and was sent and approved by the Curriculum Committee. The students were asked in a survey to rank on a scale of 1 (not met) to 5 (definitely met) each of the MLO listed above.

Data SummaryA. Set up to use and operate laboratory equipment in a safe manner.

B. Evaluate relevant observations and measurements to confirm what has been learned in the lecture.

C. Demonstrate the ability to work with lab partners to perform laboratory experiments.

The results from the surveys were quite positive. The summary below gives the mean and standard deviation for each MLO. The response return was 97.3% of the enrolled students (36 out of 37).

A. Mean of 4.92 and a St.Dev. of 0.28

B. Mean of 4.61 and a St.Dev. of 0.60

C. Mean of 4.69 and a St.Dev. of 0.52
Planned ImprovementsIt appears that PHYC 2BL is now the right track in regards to MLO. This is especially so for A. The material in PHYC 2BL (electricity & magnetism, optics, and modern physics) is very abstract and challenging to present in a conceptual manner.

The survey will be given again for the Spring of 2014. It will be interesting to see if there will be any significant improvement or not.
Program Review LinkYes, the above future improvements require resources that will be requested during the next annual PROGRAM REVIEW cycle. Examples: additional staff, equipment, software, consulting services, etc.
