Assessment Data Discussion and Analysis

TermFall 2013, Spring 2013
How and With WhomThe BSEN 70 instructors met three times during the Fall 2013 semester to discuss Spring 2013 survey results, revisions to the survey, progress on the rubric revision, and writing/editing assignment possibilities for the classes.
Number Assessed32
Data SummaryPROFICIENCY/GRADES

88% of the students in the BSEN 70 class demonstrated proficiency on exams and homework assignments with a score of 70 percent or higher. Notably, this is the same percentage of students demonstrating proficiency as in Spring 2013. 28/32 = 87.5%

100% of the BSEN 70 students who completed the survey agreed with one or more of these statements:

• I have improved in my ability to analyze sentences and apply the principles of correct sentence structure.

• I have improved in my ability to distinguish between correct and incorrect punctuation and to punctuate sentences correctly.

• I have improved in my ability to apply rules for proper capitalization, number usage, and abbreviation usage.

• I have improved in my ability to compose clear, concise, correct sentences in well-organized paragraphs and compositions.

• I have improved in my ability to proofread and edit written material to correct errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

• I have learned skills that will help me in my other courses and at my job (or at future jobs).

100% of the BSEN 70 students who completed the survey in Fall 2013 agreed that they benefited from taking the class.
Planned ImprovementsBSEN 70 instructors will assign the same writing assignment in both classes to compare the consistency of instructor grading using the BSEN rubric and the level of outcome mastery students demonstrate in each class.

Future Plans

TermSpring 2014
ActivitiesAssessment (measurement) of outcomes, Analysis and discussion of assessment data and next steps
DetailsOnly one section of BSEN 70 will be offered in the spring, and the instructor will continue to gather data on the percentage of students demonstrating success in achieving the learning outcomes. A 70 percent (or higher) average assignment score will indicate outcome achievement.

The BSEN 70 Student Self-Assessment/Satisfaction survey will be administered during the week of May 12, 2014. The survey results will be shared with other BSEN instructors to assist when planning the following semester's assignments and updating the course outline in Fall 2014.
