| Portfolio assessments of student works and survey analyses from the previous semesters evidence strength of the program and overall solidity of student proficiency with respect to major learning outcomes as students exit Basic Design. However, while the survey results demonstrate overall consistency, we observed some variation in student learning outcomes in relation to a few areas of the curriculum. In order to better understand the reasons for this variation, we decided to implement a more direct and in-depth assessment method to measure and compare student learning outcomes: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G, in relation to these specific areas of the curriculum: During the Fall 2012 semester, Basic Design faculty will collect visual documentation of student assignments with rubrics relating to: 1. Line (design element), 2. Shape (design element), 3. Balance (visual organization), along with statistics on students' proficiency levels in completing required assignments, in all sections of Art 125A. Faculty will meet to share and discuss the results of these assessments. Informed with this data and feedback from the faculty in all sections, we will update and fine-tune our existing survey, and implement again at the end of the current semester. We also recently updated the course outline for Basic Design (approved in Sp 12), which all design faculty use currently. The updated outline provides greater specificity in teaching content and student learning outcomes. | |

| From our SLO conducted in Fall 2011 we realized that the students and the faculty teaching basic drawing would benefit from a shared vocabulary list in addition to the department course outline. This will help students recognize and clarify the vocabulary that is used through out our department. In Fall 2012 we have shared vocabulary lists for Basic Drawing. | |

| Analysis of the Fall 2011 survey revealed the need to better frame questions and to review and incorporate into lectures and critiques essential basic drawing (130A) information such as line variation and overlapping planes. The Fall 2012 SLO exit survey will include at least one question related to the six stated Major Learning Outcomes of the recently updated 150A course outline. | |

| Preliminary exit surveys have been written for all Ceramics course levels (Art 160A Beginning, Art 160B intermediate, Art 160C advanced, Art 162A Ceramic Sculpture I, Art 162B Ceramic Sculpture II). After distributing exit surveys for all sections of 160 A in Spring 2012 the area has decided to increase the number of questions to 10 and have them more reflect the SLO statements in the course syllabi. We will up date the exit surveys for Art 160 A and Art 162 A and administer them to the students at the end of this semester. | |

| In the last SLO survey, students had exceptional knowledge of most technical topics covered, but the class and the SLO survey did not cover basic design topics much. The course will now cover some basic design information, and the SLO survey will have design questions for the students. |
